This cherished chipped beef recipe hails from my mother and is affectionately referred to as SOS (Same Ole Stuff). It is a quintessential comfort food that is simple to prepare and pairs perfectly with a refreshing cold beer.

Ingredients

  • Dried beef chopped (1 jar, 8 ounces)
  • Butter 2 tablespoons
  • All-purpose flour 2 tablespoons
  • Warm milk 1 ½ cups
  • Cayenne pepper a pinch
  • Bread toasted

Method

  1. Begin by assembling all necessary ingredients.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Gradually incorporate the warm milk, adding it slowly and whisking thoroughly after each addition. Increase the heat to medium-high, bringing the mixture to a boil while stirring until it thickens.
  4. Fold in the chopped dried beef and cayenne pepper, cooking until the beef is heated through.
  5. Serve the creamy mixture generously over the toasted bread.

Notes

Recipe Tip: This dish can also be prepared using 3/4 pound of browned and drained hamburger meat, offering a hearty alternative to the traditional dried beef.
