- In a large nonstick skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions along with a pinch of salt. Cook the mixture, stirring occasionally, until the onions are tender and golden brown, approximately 45 to 55 minutes.
- Once the onions are caramelized, incorporate the sliced apples, sugar, an additional teaspoon of salt, the ground cinnamon, and 3 tablespoons of water. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the apples are caramelized, which should take about 10 to 15 minutes.
