Cuisine American
- 18 cups thinly sliced apples
- 4 ½ cups white sugar
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice
- 10 cups water
Begin by gathering all necessary ingredients to ensure a smooth cooking process.
In a large bowl, combine the thinly sliced apples with lemon juice, tossing gently to coat. Set this mixture aside for later use.
In a Dutch oven, bring the water to medium heat. In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar, cornstarch, ground cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Gradually add this dry mixture to the heated water, stirring thoroughly until it reaches a boil. Maintain a rolling boil for 2 minutes, stirring continuously.
Incorporate the prepared apples into the boiling mixture and return to a boil. Then, reduce the heat, cover the pot, and allow it to simmer until the apples become tender, which should take approximately 6 to 8 minutes. Afterward, let the mixture cool for 30 minutes.
Carefully ladle the apple filling into five freezer-safe containers, ensuring to leave about ½ inch of headspace in each. Allow the filling to cool at room temperature for no more than 1.5 hours before sealing and placing in the freezer. This filling can be stored for up to 12 months.
Enjoy!
